Video of the Day 13 February 2014: Blu Bop, “Sinister Minister”
Paul Messinger’s work with his band Climb Jacob’s Ladder has previously featured on this site, and now Paul has a new project that’s all about the music of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. Paul’s got the goods: great sound, great technique, great ideas–and his bands always sound new and instantly great. After you’ve checked this piece out, listen to some of the other Blu Bop stuff, and don’t forget to give another listen to some of the great stuff on Youtube by Climb Jacob’s Ladder.

Richard: Thanks for posting the video … this band has been a fantastic challenge … all the guys are really top pros, all of us just wanted to see if we ‘could’ figure out how to play this stuff … On a side note … two hours before we sound-checked the show that the audio is based on, I found out all my harps had been either misplaced or stolen at the gig the night before … I found a few junker harps I’d been practicing with in my car, and that’s what I played the show with … 14 vintage Filisko or Sleighs gone … wow, eh???
Hope to catch you next SPAH man … some more vids coming out from this show, plus I’ll be releasing the AMERICA project in a few months …

Oh yeah … one more thing … the sound I’m getting on this tune is through the Crate VC-508. I use it as a ‘processor’ really, don’t use the speaker … I use the ‘direct out’ function of the amp, then feed it through my pedal-board … I think it’s a gr8 amped sound, gain-staged without having to turn the volume way up … I thought you’d enjoy that little factoid, as you are a big proponent of that little amp’s qualities … I just found another one to use as a spare, got it for $100 bucks, sounds gr8 too …
Yeah, I’ve still got my own souped-up VC508, modded by Ron Holmes. It’s a great amp–one of the best of the 5-watt 8-inchers out there. I played through a standard VC508 at one of Joe Filisko’s Monday night gatherings in Chicago not long ago, and it sure sounded like the real thing. A 5 watt tube amp is still a lot of fun, innit?
Really sounding great Paul!
